SCAR Community Gobo Program

Bring the Light.

SCAR owns four powerful gobo projection kits — each one bright enough to light up a building. Think of it like the bat signal, but for Spokane’s own community vigilantes.

Our goal: all four kits in use across Spokane every single evening.

That means we need volunteers like you.

1-2

Hours per evening, per kit

100

Percent community vibes

This is what volunteering looks like.

Projecting a gobo is one of the most visible, low-barrier ways to show up for your community. No experience needed — SCAR staff will walk you through everything at pickup.

Light activism is peaceful, non-destructive, and powerful. When people driving home from work see a message of justice projected onto a building, they know they’re not alone. That matters.

Best Times to Project

Evening commute hours or right after dusk — timing shifts with the seasons, but the window is usually 1–2 hours.

Time Commitment

We encourage 1–2 hours per evening for each day you have a kit checked out. Short shifts, big visibility.

What You're Doing

Building community spirit. Letting your neighbors know the community cares. Putting justice into public view.

HOW IT WORKS

Five steps. Big impact.

The process is simple. SCAR staff are there with you at every step.

1

Pick Your Dates

Browse the reservation calendar and claim the days that work for you — one evening, a long weekend, or a whole week.

Reserve a GoBo Kit

2

Choose a GOBO

Each lens projects a different phrase or symbol of justice, solidarity, or hope. Pick the message you want to put into the world.

3

Sign & Pick Up

Stop by the SCAR office to read and sign a release agreement. Staff will walk you through setup and answer every question you have. The equipment is portable and easy to use.

4

Project Responsibly

Use one of our suggested locations or choose your own. Aim for 1–2 hours during evening commute or just after dusk. Never project onto moving vehicles, roadways, or occupied residences.

5

Return & Pass It On

Return the kit so the next volunteer can take it out. Every night all four kits are in use is a win for the community.

WHAT IS A GOBO PROJECTOR?

Light leaves an impression.

A gobo projector is a specialized light that shines through a precision-cut lens — called a gobo — to project words, symbols, or images onto any surface. Unlike paint or physical signage, projections are completely temporary. They use light only, leaving no marks, no damage, but making a big impression.

Legal. Peaceful. Visible.

Projection allows messages to appear at scale, safely and non-destructively, creating visibility for your community while fully respecting shared spaces. It is legal, peaceful, and striking.

These tools are available to trusted community members. We ask everyone who borrows a kit to use it thoughtfully — not because we’re worried, but because careful use keeps this program sustainable for the whole community.

Use responsibly.

  • Do not project onto moving vehicles or roadways
  • Do not project onto occupied private residences
  • Return the kit on time so others can use it
